Female Patriots
Many American History stories feature the brave men who fought in the Revolutionary War. Standing at their side were many brave women and girls who contributed in a great way to the battle for freedom. This page is dedicated to the many female patriots who stood firm in the cause of liberty. Sybil's Night RideOn the stormy night of April 26, 1777, young Sybil Ludington rode on her horse spreading the word that the British were coming. They had already set fire to the nearby town of Danbury, Connecticut and the glow of the flames had turned the night sky to fiery red. Sybil rode through the countryside to alert the patriots with the cry of "Muster at Ludington's!" Sybil's ride was similar to the one famously performed by Paul Revere, though she rode more than twice the distance of Revere and was just 16 years old at the time. "Engaging examples of 18th-century colonial American life-spinning wheels, fireplace cookery, quill pens, and candlesticks-and even a number of playful cats can be found on every page." -- School Library Journal Click here for more information. The Bravest Woman in AmericaIda Lewis loved everything about the sea, so when her father became the official keeper of Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island, she couldn't imagine anything better. Throughout the years, Ida shadowed her father as he tended the lighthouse, listening raptly to his stories about treacherous storms, drowning sailors, and daring rescues. Under her father's watchful eye, she learned to polish the lighthouse lens so the light would shine bright. She learned to watch the sea for any sign of trouble. And, most importantly, she learned to row. Ida felt ready for anything--and she was. Award-winning author Marissa Moss pairs up with award-winning illustrator Andrea U'Ren in a stunning collaboration that sheds light on a remarkable piece of history. Based on the true story of Ida Lewis, who was dubbed "the Bravest Woman in America" and who was recognized with the Congressional Life Saving Medal and the American Cross of Honor, this inspiring and unforgettable tale of courage and real-life heroism is a tribute to brave women everywhere. Betsy is the girl power answer to Paul Revere as she rides through the night to alert Colonial troops of an impending attack on the barrier island of Currituck, NC. Repeated for over two hundred years as an oral tradition, the legend of Betsy Dowdy is a classic American tale of a girl who simply believed she could be free. Inspired by the danger and daring of this ordinary North Carolinian girl, The Ride is a story about stepping up to help the cause you believe in, doing even what little you can, and building the United States of America. Kidnapped from her home in Africa and shipped to America, she'd had everything taken from her -- her family, her name, and her language. But Phillis Wheatley was no ordinary young girl. Amid the tumult of the Revolutionary War, Phillis Wheatley became a poet and ultimately had a book of verse published, establishing herself as the first African American woman poet this country had ever known. She also found what had been taken away from her and from slaves everywhere: a voice of her own. Click here for more information. |
